Just read this in the Numismatic News and thought some here might be interested.

Thousands tried to order the 2004 Westward Journey Nickel Series Coin and Medal Set Jan. 5, and were denied.

Now there is a chance some who were turned away from the 25,000-set sellout may receive the sets after all.

On Feb. 7, the U.S. Mint sent out a letter to 1,500 people teling them that their orders amy be filled.

The Mint says it may have a number of sets available at a later date due to cacellations of orders and returns. Nobody is sure how many sets will be available.

"Rather than destroying them, we'd like as many people that want them to have them as possible," said Gloria Eskridge, associate director of sales and marketing at the U.S. Mint.

A total of 14,000 orders were denied. Eskridge said 12,500 of those cusotmers will receive letters telling them that the Mint won't be able to fulfill their orders.

The Mint used a first-come, first-served basis to determinethe 1,500 who would receive letters stating there wasa chance their orders would be accepted. Their orders were next in line when the sets sold out Jan. 7.

Despite the Mint's imposing a limit of 10 sets per household, they sold out two days after their Jan. 5 release. Early reports indicated that the sets sold out in a half hour, but they were reopened following the imposition of the 10-set limit. The Mint told customers to allow six to eight weeks to find out if hteir orders would be filled.

If you're one of the 1,500 that has a shot at any available sets and you ordered by credit card, if the card you provided expires prior to March 31, 2005, you must contact the Mint's Customer Care Center to provide updated credit card information. Otherwise, you will not be eligible.

And, if the Mint is unable to fill your order, you will be notified that your order was canceled and the Mint says you will receive a refund.

If you have questions or would like to cancel your order, call the Mint's Customer Care Center at (800) USA-Mint (872-6468)

Please forgive any typo's. It wasn't a long article, but a lot of typing. This article was taken verbatim from February 22, 2005 issue of Numismatic News.

This is not the first mishap concerning the ordering process at the Mint. The company that provides this service is far from satisfactory. They are responsible for not only the phone orders but also processing the website orders. Often in the short run series, they turn customers away early for a fear of selling out. This has caused numerous complications over the years.

It looks to me like an awfully lot of them got returned so apparently a lot of collectors felt like I did, when mine arrived, but I never send anything back unless it would have visible damage. It is far easier to just sell it than go through the hassle of returning the set. I still have mine but NOT FOR LONG!!!
