Ciao, here a token that I cannot understand.
It is made in iron, 22 mm.
The legends: 20 KONTRARY 1871 / GRANDE IMPERO DELLA RUSSIA ARTISTICA (Great Empire of the Artistic Russia).
I cannot understand the translation of the value " 20 Kontrary", I tried all different cyrillic letters but it doesn't make any sense.
The second strange thing is that the legend on the obverse is written in Italian.
Maybe a token given to some Italian artists traveling to Russia?

Found another coin just like it on another language Forum:
https://www.lamoneta.it/topic/16186...a-artistica/

Edit: pretty sure your answers are there if you care to translate Italian (I think it's italian) one Italian word I know is gettone which means token.

Bonus! I just discovered that you can copy and paste entire posts into the Google Italian to English translator.

Thanks for having discovered this interesting post on the forum lamoneta.it
In fact they make several hypothesis on the origin of this strange token. You can easily translate all of it with google.
Probably, they say it is connected with some "club" of artists that were in contrast with the main artistic institutions and the 20 Kontrary should be read as it sounds in Italian: "Venti contrari", which means against winds, as Kontray is not a Russian word.

Hello! Kontrarj is not russian word. I never seen this token before, I bet it's not russian. Why you saying "KONTRARY"? I can clearly see it's contrarj.
I searched Artistic Russia on russian, nothing except 1 old book (1884) about art culture.

I've been trying to link this to the English word contrarian, a person who expresses a contradicting viewpoint, especially one who denounces the majority persuasion

This, as a political philosophy, was in vogue from around 1860.

Sadly, Google translates this into Russian as #1087;#1088;#1086;#1090;#1080;#1074;#1086;#1087;#1086;#1083;#1086;#1078;#1085;#1099;#1081;
