It was the best of times, it was the worst of times. It was the season of joining CCF, it was the season of repeated frustration. It was the winter of hope, it was the spring of despair.
1. The Well Travelled Coins On the eve of U.S. income tax day, I won a couple of lots in an auction with a European auction house. I was notified when the coins shipped, and when I hadn't received them 3 weeks later, I inquired with the auction house, and was given the tracking number. To my surprise, I learned that two days before, an attempt had been made to deliver them to my house. However, the package had been addressed incorrectly: my house number was off by one digit. The item was thus deemed "undeliverable." I went immediately to my post office, but (alas!) it was too late. The item had already begun the return flight. I gave the correct address to the auction house, they apologized for their mistake, and vowed to re-send the coins when they came home to roost.
It has now been about another three weeks, so yesterday I went online again with the tracking number. To my (recurring) surprise, I found that there was an attempt to deliver the package again on June 7, and the package was again deemed undeliverable. What happened on June 7? I took a week of vacation, and filed a hold mail with the USPS. They did hold my mail, but somebody made the mistake of not holding the registered envelope. So, back it went home to roost a second time.
The coins have now logged 12,500 frequent flyer miles, and have one leg to go. Tomorrow I will try to reach a supervisor at the local post office to lodge a complaint. And will apologize to the auction house for the mistake of the U.S. Postal Service.
Any bets on when (if?) I will get my coins?
