This coin was undug in Niagara-on-the-Lake, the site of many early british settlers.

it's in aG with a pretty flat obverse. The front reads: "FOR THE PUBL(IC) GOOD" with Hibernia seated to left holding a Harp. The Obverse has some readable lettering saying ".... ROGEDA OR"

I've identified it as Batty 3741 from http://www.irish-tokens.co.uk/batty.htm

Drogheda

3741 O.- "I M Co." in cypher, "Payable at Drogheda or Dublin*"
R.- Hibernia seated to left holding a Harp, "For . the . Public . Good 1792...

What do you think?

I have a couple similar, known as Conder tokens. These were private issue coinage to offset the shortage of copper needed in colonization. In the US, they accepted somewhat the Irish Conders, but rejected the British ones for commerce... Wonder why, lol! These were issued from 1788 through 1805 or so, maybe a bit later. Not surprised they be in Canada as well. Similar in use to US Hardtimes Tokens of 1833-1844. Still has good detail for a dug coin!

I have a reference site for these on my laptop, will try to update later.

What an awesome find. I could picture myself with a metal detector someday.

... sorry, to clarify, I didn't dig it. I bought it from a coin dealer in Niagara who said that someone local found it in their garden.

I was buying a bunch of Canadian Tokens (basically our Condors) and he threw it in for $2.
Rest in Peace

That's still a great snag, for $2 is really good. Here's a reference to Conder tokens if you are interested, is Conder's original work, bit hard to figure out by the descriptions but it catalogues most all of the recognized varieties.
