Hi all,

I know nothing about coin collecting so I am in need of some help. My great uncle recently passed away and I found a gold coin among some of his old stuff. Just doing some google research it looks like a 2011 american gold eagle coin... but there seem to be some differences from any of the ones I have seen images of online, specifically on the back of the coin. Take a look... is it real, counterfeit, or something different than what I am thinking? Any ideas about what is the probable value of the coin? Sorry if the image quality is poor. Thanks in advance for any help.

You are correct, that reverse is not a normal Gold Eagle reverse. It appears to say "50 Commemorative coins", so that points to it may have been part of a set from an outside party, not the mint.

Here is an example of an actual Gold Eagle. With gold amount and a dollar value.

I guess the real questions are, is it rare? is it worth anything or worth holding onto? Is it even real gold or is it just plated? And why cant I find any pictures of a coin the identical backside?
