Its not trap gases or anything like that its a formed S. It maybe a clash of some kind ?

*Update looking yesterday I found the N of cents and only letter on the hole reverse has N extra serif.

That just looks like die polishing to me.

Amac, I see the S shape but don't believe it's anything significant. What catches my eye is what appears to be minor doubling of the horizontal bar above Lincs head and the column to the left. This could just be remments of polishing to remove a clash. Take a close look.

Hi,
There is nothing other than imagination causing the look of an S. There is the slightest amount of die polishing evident. This is just one of those things where if you stare at it long enough, you can convince yourself of something that really is nothing.

Sorry, but just saying it's not bubbled doesn't stop that from being one of the likely scenarios. It's just texture of the plating for one reason or another.

Thanks,
Bill

If I could magnify it more more you could see it better but 5x is all I can do with my camera.
I just scan it last night and there it was in my pocket change.

I feel silly to admit this but I am now sure that I have never really looked closely enough at any of my coins to spot the full details let alone any errors. I had NO idea that there was a little tiny image of lincoln on the penny!! This blows my mind, but thanks for this post or I may have never have known.

Die wear can cause all kinds of interesting things to appear on coins, they're always fun to look at.

Amac...thanks, but at 5X or 10X or 50X...it would be the same. I can easily see what you are looking at. there is just no way for it to be an S. It can resemble one, but it can't be one.

Thanks,
Bill
