For those of you that read my "Hello everyone" post in the "introduce yourself forum", this is the coin I have questions about.

THE STORY
My son has a lemonade stand on the corner next to our house. He told me that a man bought a glass of lemonade and gave him this quarter as a tip. He told my son that it was a special quarter and that he should put it in his pocket instead of the tip jar and keep it in a safe place. I am a novice coin collector so I need help to know if this was intentional or a flaw. I set my Fuji on macro and tried to get the best pictures at the best angles that shows the most detail.

Picture #1

This image I am trying to show, what looks to me like a part of a circular stamp that has a beginning and an end. It shows up better in the last image. Also you can see the flaw across the face. The flaw across the face as not discolored the coin at all. It is almost smooth but has the appearance of chipped metal, if that makes sense. I have seen something similar with a piece of rock shell. Chip it and you will see small ridges where the chip was removed.

Picture #2

The crack or line.
Also in this image, if you look across the facial flaw or mark, the original stamped image faintly continues across the flaw such as the neck line, neck, side of the face and nose.

Picture #3 and #4 are from other angles.

Tell me what you think. If you see something I don't, please point it out. I really want it to be a special coin. But if not, like I said I am a novice and will soak up any knowledge offered to me from this forum.
Well I still have about two hours of daylight left. I think I will load the family and drive south to an old ghost town that use to be a mining community. The kids can chase lizards and collect lizard tail for there collection. My wife will kick back and read her copy of Eclipse and I will grab my metal detector and see if I can add to my collection.

Thanks

Sorry for the picture quality, I am also a novice at taking pictures of coins. If anyone wants the original images for closer inspection let my know and I can email them to you. I have found that you can see the detail much better if you can zoom in on it.

Looks like a struck-thru error to me. I suggest getting it certified. ANACS could do that for you.

The coin was struck through a piece of debris. Sending it to be graded and encapsulated would make no sense, as it isn't valuable enough to warrant the expense that a submission entails. It's still a nice find, though.

Thank you for the comments and information. I have three more question. I have done some research on struck through coins. Looking at this one it looks to me that there was two or three pieces of debris.
1. Is it common to find more than one pieces of debris with a struck through coin?
2. Under and left of the "T", in the statement "In God We Trust", in your opinion was that mark also done at the mint?
3. What is your opinion of it's worth? I am not interested in sell it, just curious.

Thanks.....

The mark under the T doesn't look like a struck through but some post mint damage. Probably from the reeding of another quarter? As to the value, I don't know what it's worth. Your best bet would be to check on ebay to see what other similar quarter errors sold for.

It's not common to have a coin struck through several pieces of debris. But it does happen from time to time. The mark under the "T" appears to be post-strike damage, but I can't be entirely sure from my vantage point. As to value, I'd estimate $30 - $40.

What an excellent way to get a kid interested in coin collecting! And, if not, then it gets put back into circulation.

I could never part with it.
