I thought I could never afford one of my preferred types, one of the more beautiful of all greek coinage, on my view : a Syracuse tetradrachm by the engraver Phrygillos representing Arethousa surrounded by four dolphins on obverse. They often reach awful prices in public auctions. I found one in a shop in Barcelona for a reasonable price... 26 mm, 16,99 g I would have never expected to own one one day!

Weight and size is right, style looks good also. I see a shadow strike of the face of the biga driver. It looks 100% genuine to me. Are you going to get it certified by David Sear? Beautiful coin, congrats.

Well, maybe, I didn't think about it. I wanted to ask a feedback from a good expert here in Paris first. It's always a concern to send such a coin by mail... Does it make such a difference to have it certified by David Sear?

Even the "bargain" price must have been thousands of euros ! Yes it is very important to get this certified. David Sear is world renowned but I would assume that there must be somebody in Europe capable of rendering an expert opinion on this coin. I can't imagine spending the lucre on it and not getting it looked at. The high end fakes can fool even the best detectives Does the British Museum offer any service ?

I'm sure the Louvre has some ancient coin experts that would be able to certify it. I'd try there first.

Wow ... my knowledge of the ancient coins is nearly zero - but truly enjoying what I see from your post and hopeful for you that the true experts weigh in relative to authenticity.
It's am amazing looking coin - well centered on the flan and well struck -extremely high relief - alas almost too good to be real.
Please keep us informed - regardless of how it turns out. I am indeed pulling for you on authenticity

For comparison, the OP coin with two from CNG and one from Leu Numismatik AG. Then two more in the smaller pic, from other auction houses.

Wonderful coin. I sure hope that it is real. I have been to a number of coin shows and shops in Barcelona and other regions of Catalonia over the years. And while there are some very reputable dealers selling only totally authentic pieces,I've found coin markets there to be flooded with fakes ranging from nearly indistinguishable from originals to laughably bad. (I've even seen fake 8 reales with raised chop marks and / or the reverse of Morgan dollars). So I would absolutely get your coin checked out. If you are in London, the British Museum's Department of Coins and Medals does offer free evaluations by appointment on Wednesday. I've done extensive archival research there and had their experts look at a couple of my coins. They were very knowledgeable and friendly.
