Survival rates, and even more specifically (for the high end of collecting) how many survived in high grade.An additional factor for lower grade coins, is that people often are attracted by things such as age and S mintmarks EVEN when a newer coin or the P mint is rarer. This is because most people haven't memorized the mintages of all coins for all years. They do know, however, the general rules.
Old=valuable
San Francisco=valuable
The price guides will reflect this reality because they compile the prices that are being paid and that data will include the factors above.
