This 1883 nickel should have "cents" on the reverse (has motto) but does not. Any thoughts on what's going on?

There is a lot of history involved, but to make it simple 1883 had both with cents and without cents. All other dates had with cents.

Yours is valued under $1.

You'll notice that the motto is on top under the word states. It should have "cents" at the bottom. The "no cents" version has the motto at the bottom if I'm not mistaken.

It should have the word CENTS in that blank area at the bottom and it is a "With Cents" variety.
Interesting as it really doesn't look "tooled" to remove it.
Maybe it was?
I'm no error guy but perhaps it was a Grease Filled Die in that area?

I can tell this because the motto E Pluribus Unum is there above the V
The Type 1 has E Pluribus Unum in the space where CENTS appeared.

These are reverses of the two types of 1883 V nickels.

Correct - the word Cents has either been obliterated or obscured by grease in the die. Good catch.
