Great references, all. So much knowledge available for the price of a little time.

Too bad that price seems too great to pay for a lot of folks, Mox!

Errors are quite simple to price, if they don't have the immediate wow factor, eye appeal they are worth very little and hard to move, imagine using 10x 50x just to see some doubling or clash. Most modern coins are made on presses going 200 or more a minute, they just have to meet minimum standards, just like if they were producing washers, if you magnify anything large enough you will eventually see some variance

I have been an avid collector/hoarder of Vicky large cent varieties. What I collect can be easily seen by eye and no more than a 6/8X loupe. I, too, pay no attention to stuff that is magnified 40 times to see it. Coins were utilitarian, every-day objects to be used just like nails, barbed wire, or bottle caps. The "specs" were quite quite liberal ... if it was round, weighed about enough and you could see it was xx cents, then it was OK. Now, things that were changed during the mintage year by the mintmaster are an entirely different thing ... dies not right?, then fix it. New portrait, then add it. Use the dies until they break and only change one die at a time! I love varieties!

Doubleddie.com is a very good site for for researching Doubled Dies. I use this site a lot, and I've been able to identify almost every Doubled Die that I've found.
