What would you say happened to this coin? It's at the top to the right of the "F". Looks like a die crack and a Cud? with some gougeing going on there too. What's it look like to you? Thanks
.

Right of the "E" I think you meant. Looks post mint to me. I'd say a gouge.

Yep you are right the "E". I saw that crack in there and the gouging and thought maybe someone wanted a necklace. That pointer is from my microscope.

The tiny scratches and the gouge would be consistent with post mint damage. Could be tooled as well. That's my opinion. Also looks like an ex-jewelry piece as well based on the raised metal on top of coin.

Hi,

vermontensium has it exactly right. This coin was connected to a bracelet or a necklace. (Or any other type of jewelery) Then the coin was broken off at a later time.

Thanks,
Bill

OK, I just looked at another (a 1942) and it had a large mint mark. That means this one is small.

Which is the most common? Or are they equal?

It is thought that only 15% to 20% are of the large mintmark variety. The small MM is the common one.
