I bought this because it is a rare variety, estimate of around 29 examples in the following grades MS-0, AU-3, XF-0, VF/F-3, and VG/AG-23. I sent it in to PCGS and they are now sending it back, what do you think she graded?

Well I guess if you overlook the rim ding and the horrible whizzing - I hope you had that in consideration when you bought it!

with VG details. Rare, yes. Pretty, no.

Well I guess the question remains - a horrible cleaned rarity for less cost - (that is probably going to be hard to sell) - or save for a nice example with no problems?

Personally VG details cleaned, but wouldn't be surprised if PCGS called this a "market acceptable" Cleaning and straight graded it VG-8/10.

A little more on this coin, PCGS has a total of 9 (now 10) coins graded for this variety and they are as follows: XF45-1, VF35-1, VF25-2, VG10-1, G04-2, AG3-1, FR02-1. Heritage shows a total of three have sold at their site, G04-$575.00, VG10-$705.00, VF25-$1175.00. I did find an 1875 S Micro without the variety attribution and it was graded VF35 that sold for $1880.00. I had bought this coin knowing that it was a details coin and had problems but the price was right and I needed it for my collection. This is now where I was shocked when I got the grade from PCGS, They graded it G06 straight grade.

i think this approach to grading that depends on rarity does a disservice to numismatics.
for a company that whose business depends on credibility, they seem to be cavalier about squandering it.

Quote: i think this approach to grading that depends on rarity does a disservice to numismatics Are you saying that they graded it that because of the rarity? I do not think that is the case here because I did ask for variety attribution but did not get it. I spoke with the manager and they said that it did not go through the variety attribution group, they missed it on my submission request. They want me to send it back to get that attribution free of cost.

VG-8 details. I have lost all faith in the TPG's. Too many details coins are now slipping by as straight grade, especially Drapped Bust copper. A silver coin like this is screaming cleaned.

Absolutely laughable they considered this market acceptable. It is clearly a Details coin.
