What does this really mean? The coin is so dark that it's on it's death bed? If I leave it out in the open for another six months the coin will evaporate? The surfaces are too original and it's time to give them a spit shine to restore the luster? Coin will become radioactive soon?

I would love to hear some logical explanations. B/C to me right now, it just sounds like a bunch of mumbo jumbo.

It's used to describe black toning. Technically all toning is a form of corrosion but the colorful toning is obviously highly desirable. Once it goes black though it's reached it's terminal state as it's gone through it's color progressions and is going to stay black. The market doesn't really like the dark black look a lot of the time though it can look good or add character on some seated stuff, it's undesirable on things like Morgans.

Just because something is black doesn't necessarily mean that it couldn't be dipped away, but there is also no guarantee that it could either.

Not in six months or our life time, but eventually it is possible that some types of toning can eat through a coin given enough time or pit the surface if you removed it

I know Baseball, I was being sarcastic. Perhaps pictures of coins with terminal toning would help educate folks better. So post pics of examples if you've got them, folks.

I guess my explanation in the other thread wasn't good enough.

Just kidding.

Anyway, there can be several definitions of terminal toning.

Toning that is going to turn completely black soon, and therefore become "ugly".
Toning that is black and reduces the eye appeal of a coin.
Toning that has eaten into the coin's surfaces and cannot be removed with a dip without leaving some stains behind.

Those are three ways I've heard it used.

That's my vote. What's the half-life of a Seated dollar?

Let's see you define it. Knowledge is best expressed when communicated. Asking others to simply do it isn't how people who don't know that read can learn

I think he meant that he was being sarcastic about the coin evaporating not about the definition of terminal toning....

How is that relevant or what does that have anything to do with anything?

Knowledge is shared through explanation, these long series of I am going to post a blank canvas question and never explain it threads are just asking others to explain something that someone else supposedly knows.

It would be far more helpful and educational for someone who does know the topic to post about it where corrections or discussion can take place. An actual discussion or place people can look not sort sarcasm hoping others do the work. I posted a real answer for that reason.

Otherwise the answer is known no reason for anyone to respond ever the poster has nothing to learn ever

It is relevant in that you attempted to continue a sarcastic line of thinking about when and if a coin would evaporate. In any case, your suggestion ignored the difference between evaporation and corrosion...(which is the joke)

That's interesting considering my response specifically talked about corrosion and never once mentioned evaporation at all.

It helps to actually read content and not just decide to try and take shots at someone.
