I recently posted a question about ATB Quarters with a S mint mark. I was told that S mint marks are not circulated and only intended for collectors. I look at older coins and sometimes it a D or P mint mark that the least amount of coins were made. I was looking at a 1995 S quarter on line. There were only a couple of million of these made. Does that mean the S mint mark was never circulated and intended for collectors only? Is it always the S mint mark that doesn't get circulated?

These are only silver and clad proof San Francisco quarter, finding one in circulation would be rare but not impossible.

No Philly and Denver mint uncirculated sets and proof sets every year. San Francisco mints Special Mint Sets (SMS) and proof sets, West Point mints only certain special coins.
San Francisco does mint a unc. cent

Please jump in if I need correcting, I am still fairly new to this. Quarters haven't had any circulating S mint coins since the 1950s and there were circulating S pennies from 1968 until 1974

Thanks... what about pennies, nickels, and dimes? Always the S mint marks are for collectors?

@angloamerican - you are correct. I was not sure when they stopped the "S" penny.
@Nonna - with a few exceptions, yes most current "S" mint marks are mostly for collectors.

For Cents, S mint marks 1975 forward were intended for collectors only.
For dimes, S mint marks 1968 forward were intended for collectors only.
For nickels, s mint marks 1971 forward were intended for collectors only.
For quarters, s mint marks 1968 forward were intended for collectors only.
For halves, s mint marks 1968 forward were intended for collectors only.

This should help you guys out!

Just for the record, there were "S" circulation strikes of the SBA dollar in 1979 and 1980, but only for collectors in 1981 through mint sets. Is that right? Were there any "S" Ike dollars minted for circulation?

I don't believe that there were any S mint IKES for circulation, but I'm not too familiar with the Ike series. However, I think there were 1981S SBA's minted for circulation as well.

All 1981 SBA coins from all three mints (P-D-S) were NIFC. None were issued for circulation. All of the 1981 business strikes went right into the mint sets.

Buy a " Red Book" and you will find all the information you need and more. Ignore it's prices - they are retail and always out of date (well, as a relative indication they're ok).

This is the current one, but last years or the year before is more than good enough...
