I think you're better off selling it. It's the holy grail of Morgans, but the rest of the family knows its worth and will be resentful if you keep it for yourself without compensating them. IMO as a former executor and ongoing trust manager, it won't be forgotten and it's not worth fighting over. After my dad died I liquidated his coin accumulation, netting my mom $15,000. It paid for a year's worth of assisted living. Everyone was happy.

Quote: I think you're better off selling it. There are no coin collectors in your family, and it would be better for this coin to be owned by a collector for their Morgan dollar set. This issue is what COMPLETES sets. If your mother would rather have the money, then I think she should. She deserves the reward this coin will bring. It will be better for her and the proud new owner. As I stated before, I highly recommend sending this to PCGS for the Gold Shield Secure holder with TrueView imaging, which is included with this service. Here's one of my examples: Gold Shield™ Secure Holder TrueView™ Image Again, thank you for sharing your story with us! I'm glad your father lived a long and happy life. He was blessed.

Darth, that 03 is a thing of beauty. If that 93 S looked like that I could by my mom a new house.
I've been looking into PCGS, so you have to become a member to send a coin in. Is this correct?

I will talk to my sisters and see what they want to do.
I agree it would be more appreciated by a collector. I would still have the story of the coin and how valuable it was.

PCGS photograde link: https://www.PCGS.com/photograde/#/Morgan/GradesIMHO, believe this 93 S is a VG8. Reverse makes VG10, but the obverse does not. Another suggestion, contact Great Collections. They will send the coin for slabbing and handle the online auction as well.

I believe that's the app the dealer had. We compared my coin to the app and he also said VG8 and I agreed.
So if I do an online auction, I won't know who is getting the coin or what their going to do with it, is that correct?

Correct as far as I know ... unless you sell it through ebay where the buyers mailing address is provided so you can ship the item to them. There is no way I would list this coin on ebay without certification by either NGC or PCGS ... buyers are way too skeptical of raw coins of this value. Suppose the same is true of any on-line auction.

I agree that having the coin graded by PCGS or NGC would be the best choice but there is more involved. Having to join and higher fees. You might check with a local con shop, to see if they could send it in for you. Third choice would be ANACS grading service, you don't have to join and cheaper grading fees. This grading service works for ebay, but I don't thenk Heritage or Great Collection auction sites will list anything but PGCS or NGC graded coins. I could be wrong on that, have to check with them if you go that route.

I'm sure it has been said already, but just in case it hasn't: Don't Clean It!

If you go the GC route, you do not have to join a club or pay a membership for a grading service. I would NOT have ANACS slab this coin. I AM a fan of ANACS, but, in this situation, maximum value for family will be realized.
Imagine if you post the link to the auction on CCF, several members will bid....and you never know, one of the members might win.

That would be a possibility, but I like the idea of letting Great Collections handle everything. I had no idea they would take care of sending coins in to be graded as well. That's service! Personally, that's the route I would go. This coin is deserving of the royal treatment.

I've been going over everything I can fine on GC website. Looks like the buyer pays most of the fees. I assume the "hammer" is what the seller gets and the total selling price is what the buyer pays. I have contacted them for an estimate of what they think the coin will sell for. Don't know how accurate that will be.
