These are called Die Chips. It happens when a small piece of metal chips off of the die, causing small raised blobs to appear on struck coins. It leaves a small void in the die as well.

There's no value over face value for these unfortunately. They're too small. They have to look like this to carry any extra value. http://goccf.com/t/298377

You're very welcome and no problem! Collectors in general want big Die Chips, because they gain collectors value.

Question: Are there die cracks to the left of the "F" and right of the second "L" in "colorful"? If so, could this be the beginning of what eventually might have turned into an IDB?

thank you E-n-V. Hello fortcollins. I think there is something, not sure what. I found more die chips, if the name is right 1st photo: there is something right of "L" scratch or die crack, I don't know. 2nd photo: there is a die crack 3rd photo: there is a die chip, under "O" of "COL" 4th photo: there is 3 or 4 die cracks left of "F", and a die crack right of second "L" and by the way, what is IBD, if there is a link I appreciate it. the reflective surface make ot hard to me taking clear photo, or even see what is going. 1 2 3 4

I had a Washington quarter with a die chip, looked like a booger....check my old posts. I got a couple bucks out of it on ebay....Never know till you try. "It's only worth what someone will pay for it"

Quote: Picture #1 and #2 are just scratches on the coin, not errors. The later pics answered my question. The Colorado quarter was one of the several "busy: and somewhat problematic designs in the series. The design placed quite a bit of stress on the dies, and both chips and small die cracks are fairly common. The chips are fun to hunt for, though. For a challenge, try assembling an all-chip or all-die-crack set of the quarters. I bet it could be done, but would be tough.

Yep, that's correct. This design was a lot of stress on the dies, causing quite a few Die Chips to appear on struck coins. You could probably find a Cud on this design eventually, if you keep searching through this particular design in OBW BU rolls.
