Pure and simple, leave the brands out of it, It's the one that works best for you.
Here's why. Some are heavier than others but may go deeper and identify better. Some are faster than others. Some have more coil options. Some work on dirt but are relatively useless on salty beaches or shallow salt water. Some work good under water but find so many targets on dry land they would drive you nuts. Some work exceptionally well at finding relics. Some have a steep learning curve especially for a newbie. There's no such thing as best for everything but there is best at the thing they do.
If you have a dealer in your area and you have to drive a few miles it should be worth it. If the dealer tries to steer you to a certain brand run don't walk out of there. It's your investment not their profit.
I know this isn't what you really wanted to hear but it best if you get whay will work best for you. Go get one and post up here with your finds.

starting out the minelab exterra 30 is very user friendly. and will do about all a guy wants to do but prospect gold..It will but not very well you really have to know your machine and what its telling you..The X70 is the one to have that will do everything. ground balance different coils discrimination levels..Thats the next one for me.and the last..oh boy never say last..

the best detector is one you feel comfortable with and understand. If you don't live near a detector store, you are gonna have to pay to play and it doesn't always work out the way you want.

Advertising is just that, in hand and in the dirt is where you get a feel for what you want.
