Hello everyone,
I'm a long time collector, first time caller.
I hopefull you guys can point me in the right direction on this one. Here we go. Many years back, in the first few months of ebay coming online. I found a coin I'd wanted since I was six. The 1785 Bar Copper. Which the seller had inadvertently placed under bars of copper, instead of colonial coins. Believe me, I got it for a song. In those days I was a roadie and was on the road when it arrived at my house. I totally forgot about it and it was a year before I found.
I inspected it and noticed that the coin had an obvious oval shape to it. Not an oval shape by much but, it's definitely wider than it is tall. Even though everything else about the coin tells me it's real. Its oval shape however, made me doubt its authenticity. I figured I'd been had. I put it away and forgot about it until just recently. A friend, who also collects, listened to my story of woe about the coin purchase. He informed me that he had read an article, some time ago, about how there were Rare examples of this coin, that had been struck on oval shaped planchets. Can't remember where but, he definitely remembers reading it. I totally believe him but, I'd like to get more info, what the dimensions should be, did the weight change, what did it change to? So I can check it out and then send it to get certified. If anyone can help me, I'd really appreciated it. I've been searching and can't seem to find any information that even mentions an oval planchet. Thanks much, Cheers

If the planchet starts out round and the coin is struck without a collar (both true in this case) when the coin is struck the metal tries to expand radially. But the bars design restricts the expansion in the 12:00 - 6:00 direction and facilitates it in the 9:00 - 3:00 direction. The result being that the finished coin is wider than it is tall. Likewise on colonials and large cents the coins tend to expand easier in the 12-6 direction than the do in the 9-3 direction and if you measure them you will find they are taller than they are wide.
