What is your opinion about a set that includes a mix of both? Have you done it? Regretted it? I'm working on a Franklin set and I have a few proof sets I was thinking of opening and putting in the album.
Thank you

Do you mean sets that have both business and proof sets for the dates or sets where its a mix of either for each individual date? If you mean either or with a mix I'm not a fan of those, but the ones with both that include everything quite a few people like.

Yes, I meant either/or with a mix.
I have a Franklin album that does not include extra holes for proofs.

Not sure about Whitman or others, but Dansco albums usually only have holes for proofs when only a proof is issued. The general rule is for 1968 and later, but there are exceptions: Lincoln cents (proof holes start in 1975), Jefferson nickels (proof holes start in 1971), and Kennedy half dollars (which actually has holes for not just the 1964 proof, but the 1965~1967 SMS coins). I am good within those confines. For my Franklin album I have not (would not) put proofs in any or all of the Philly holes. If I ever got to collecting the Franklin proofs, I would probably put them on their own blank page.

Normally I just collect business strikes but I'm starting to seriously consider putting a proof 1884 3 cent in my collection rather than a business strike.

I devised my own layouts using Whitman albums and blank pages(for the most part) incorporating both proof and mint sets 1964-2009 from early small cents through Sac dollars. Would do the same if I was rich enough to do one as Fraklins in BS and PF's, but not a realistic venture. http://goccf.com/t/317766

I've always hated that part of collecting where an Album or Folder manufacturer decides what you have to collect. I too make some of my Albums from Whitman blank covers and pages.

For the most part I prefer collecting the business strikes. I consider my Franklin set complete with the 35 coins that were minted for circulation although I do have a number of proofs both slabbed and in the original mint packaging, but I consider those icing on the cake. That being said, I am including all the proofs and silver issues in the Kennedy set I'm working on now just because I think they look really nice and for the most part they are quite affordable. There are a few that are going to take a little extra doing financially, but I feel it will be worth it when everything is complete.

When I put together my birth year set I included ALL face values, ALL Mints and ALL surfaces. My only criterion was they all had to be MS-65 or better.
