Actually it added onto the coin. It is raised. You can see where it was attached to the coin on the bottom of the metal.

I'd rather find an 1870 S quarter, or an 1873 S no arrows half, 1873 S Seated dollar, 1873 CC no arrows dime or quarter, Heck I'd even take a no arrows and rays 1853 O half dollar.
