Hi all, I don't normally post in this subforum as I don't have much in the way of classic American coins. However, I've just bought my first ever slabs - just so I can show my fellow Australians this weird "slabbing" thing that Americans do to their coins. One of them was this one, in an old "rattler" ANACS slab.

So, guess the grade (remembering the time period and slabbing company). Bonus points for saying what year it is, because I'm not entirely sure ANACS got it right.

Looks like an 1828 with a FR2 obverse.

OK, interesting - it pretty much matches my own conclusions.

The responses are uniformly correct in the assigned grade of FR-2. However, ANACS have assigned it the date 1820.

Is 1820 a reasonable date, or is 1828 more likely? Because it sure looks more like an 1828 to me.

I will toss this out. At first glance I though 1828. However, enlarging the photo - the last digit looks like it took a hit up top. So I could also see the date as : 1833 last 3 high. I would agree with the grade, but not the year on the slab.

View the curvature of the inside diameter of the first 8 and then the last digit ANACS said was a 0. They are nearly identical so unless this is an unknown 1820 "Tiny 0" then ANACS missed it.

Here's an enlargement.
