Hi, I bought this years ago from someone who just had a huge vat of random coins. I don't know if this is something that happened during minting or later. I've never seen another one like it. Any thoughts? Thanks!

I wish I knew what it was! It is a mess, isn't it? It looks like the same material as the coin so I have no idea. I'm probably going to take it over to my local coin shop and see what he has to say.

Looks like someone tried to plug a holed coin and became frustrated with his efforts and proceeded to destroy it.

To CCF! Unfortunately, it's just Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint, so it's not an error coin). It's a heavily damaged coin. It's now considered a cull coin, and has lost pretty much all of its value, except for melt value.
Errers and Varietys.

Thanks everyone, this forum is so friendly! II have been collecting coins since I was a kid and certainly have some more questions! No more weird globs though. Which is good I guess.
