More than six years ago, I did a series of posts about what the Charlton Catalogue refers to as "Silver Dollar Derivatives." They were special packaging options for commemorative silver dollars that included one or more supplemental collectible items in addition to the SD. Stamps, phone cards, special colour prints, etc. were some of these "extra" pieces. (To read the original posts type "silver dollar derivatives" in the search box - you'll get a full list.)
In 1997, 1998 and 1999, the
RCM issued "Coin and Pin" sets for its annual commemorative SD: 1997 Canada-Russia Hockey Series, 1998 RCMP 125th Anniversary and 1999 Voyages of Juan Perez.
The sterling silver pins included in these sets closely duplicated the reverse design of each SD in miniature form - the pins are roughly half the size of the SDs, 17.8mm vs. 36.07mm. I find it interesting that on the 1998 and 1999 pins the design was duplicated to the extent that the pins carry the "Canada Dollar" inscription; on the hockey pin, "Canada Dollar" is replaced with just "Canada."
When I posted about the RCMP SD and pin, I inadvertently did not include an image of the
RCM's standalone card for the pin - see below. (The back of the card is blank.)
I have a question for the community regarding the card.
Does anyone know how the pin card was distributed?
- Was it sold by the
RCM as a standalone item? (For how much?)
- Was it sent as a gift to purchasers of the SD?
- Was it a Masters Club gift?
- Was it given out as a souvenir at
RCM or RCMP events in 1998?
Any help would be much appreciated!
