Please show both sides of the coin, with pics oriented correctly.

The shape of the "2" looks wrong to me -- too fat on the entire lower half. Details look mushy, too. I'm skeptical of its authenticity.

Compare to genuine piece from PCGS at http://www.PCGScoinfacts.com/coin/detail/8996

Edit to add: Lettering on reverse (particularly the denomination) seems different as well. On the genuine piece, the thick and thin lines of the letters are more distinct. On the OP piece, the lines are closer to the same thickness.

The old man wants $500 for it. Doesn't seem worth the risk to me...

If it were genuine, it would be worth at least double that just for the gold content. I'd pass.

That should be your first clue.
Nobody sells a $40,000.00 coin for $500.00

There were only 571 minted and is one of the rarer Philadelphia Minted coins.
Any coin of that caliber would certified.

Putting that aside, it is easy to tell it is counterfeit.
Doubt if it is even gold.
Glad you didn't purchase it.

Date logo is wrong. Clear counterfeit.

That one would probably fit in well with a collection of these.

Thanks again for all of your help. I am going to pass on the coin. I am thinking about buying some magic beans from him though. He assured me, they are the real deal...

If is seems too good to be true, it is...
