While I wouldn't mind adding a Holey Dollar and Dump to my Aussie collection I don't collect "holed" coins that were holed after leaving the mint! Lots of them around that have been drilled for wearing around the neck on a chain but none hold any desire to me regardless of the coins rarity! Sorry Metalman, no holes in this household!!!

In that times, people could have needed to keep their gold together, tied up, you don't want to lose any :)

In some regions of the world (in Anatolia for examnle) people have a tradition of giving 3, 5 or more pieces of gold coins as wedding gift. The hole in your coin may be for such a reason, or as crystalk64 said, somebody just wanted to wear as an accessory.

I have actually, thru the years, seen a lot of gold with holes drilled in them. And, of course the old large cents were heavily favored back then as jewelry items. I just want to cry every time I see a classic with a hole and can't help but wonder "what were they thinking?" And many coins have been plugged, and if done correctly, very hard to notice. In my mind these coins have been altered or damaged so I never buy them but do know the gold pieces go a lot cheaper with the hole and cheap gold is pretty hard to come by right now. Hey, gold is gold, isn't it?
