Recently when I have asked for rolls of loonies I have been able to get the new rolls. Interestingly enough they are dated 2016.
The first time I got them I thought it may be because the branch received it from a customer.
Now after 5 different branches of different banks, in completely different locations having given me the same 2016 loonies I am beginning to wonder what has just happened?
Are these 2018 but showing 2016?
Were these just forgotten somewhere?
It sounds really bizarre to have 2016 loonies stashed away somewhere by the mint only to be released now. Or maybe there is a secret Santa who had it stowed away and has been going around GTA banks and branches to deposit them.
Anyone else had that experience? Any ideas on what might be happening?

It has happened to me from time to time. I would say they're using old stock before new but around the GTA you wouldn't think that going through old stock would be much of a problem. Although recently, my father gave my daughter $500 in $5 bills, and almost 20 straight came with consecutive serial numbers. Not really an odd thing for new crisp bills but they were all from 2010! Figure that one out!

I cannot speak to rolls but have received 2018 loonies in circulation so the 2018s are out in the wild!

most banks don't rotate coin boxs, they will just grab the easiest box- so there will be no rhyme or reason as to the dates.

This kind of prove what was told to me by the RCM's bulk division before it's demise last year, Canada is split into 5 or 6 regions and the 5 big banks major banking centers order new coins from RCM when needed which is not often because it's cheaper for the banks to just recycle the old ones, no shipping and handling fees. The RCM most likely has coins from previous years waiting in storage to be put into circulation, that is why some years no circulating loonies or toonies were produced. This is not the banks holding two year old coins, it was just what the RCM shipped them

2016's will show up for a while, because there are no 2017 standard loons. A lot of stock to put through from 2016. Roll fresh 2016 loonies are nice to. .

If the RCM is still shipping the banks 2016's, does that mean the banks will then get more 2017's?

Quote: does that mean the banks will then get more 2017's? I doubt it, as the 2017 loons only came in the Canada 150 version, and I'll bet they are all out there by now.

Another thing to keep in mind is that banks don't use a first-in, first-out system like for milk at the grocery store.

Hmmmmmm. This is interesting. A few months ago, I got all 2016 AU nickels from a McDonald's. Maybe they got the 2016s in the same way as you.I was thinking that someone used them to pay after hoarding the 2016s, but maybe not........
