So,I've just bought this one from an auction at a very low price, but I'm unfamiliar with the type so I'm a bit suspicios about the coin.Do you think it's genuine or a contemporary forgery? It's silver, quality silver i'd say, but I haven't checked the weight yet as my little scale needs to be replaced.
PS.Only reply if you're familiar with large crowns as I'm not looking for opinions from 50 p coin collectors!!

You are right to be concerned. These coins have been extensively counterfeited.

You need to weigh it. The correct weight is 31.82 grams.

The coin is cast, so there goes that. At least it sounds like you didn't spend much

Well it seems that I was right to be suspicious.Indeed the style looks dodgy, but the weight of 27.86gr(just checked it)confirms it's a counterfeit.Thank you for your replies!

Hi Paul I would agree that the piece is not genuine. The details are quite mushy, especially the ear of corn next to head (left of 'H' in 'HAC'), which looks like a blob. Without reading that the coin weight 28G I thought to myself that the shape looks too circular and the width seemed, at least based on picture, a bit thin. I have several (though from Utrecht) and they are a good bit thicker width-wise. Also, you will almost never encounter a type so perfectly circular, the planchets are usually asymmetrical. Regardless, the coin should weigh around 31.5g; 28g is quite too much off.
