I have a question about things which sometimes get caught in a 2X2 and touch the contained coin. Since I do have long hair, I often inadvertently get a small piece of hair stuck on a coin that I have stapled within a 2X2. Since I don't want to rip open the 2X2 and use another, I just leave it in there and figure that I'll change it eventually. Is this a bad idea? Will hair or other small particles of dust hurt a coin that is inside a 2X2?

I would be concerned if it were a nice copper coin. Copper is very reactive.

Hair certainly could. It contains sulfur-containing compounds which are released as the hair degrades with time. I can't say I've ever noticed it, but a single hair would probably leave a thin "worm-trail" of oxidation across the surface of a coin, particularly a shiny copper or silver one, if left in contact with it for prolonged periods.

Dust is an unknown quantity. Most of it is probably harmless, but some particles may be composed of something that will damage or stain a coin.

In short, I wouldn't be too worried about it in the short and medium term, but for long term storage, and for your higher quality proof and unc coins, I'd take the time to try to exclude the hairs and dust.

You must remember that the term dust or hair is rather vague. Dust could be anything that is small. Hair is made up of different particles of materials from your body and whatever you have on at the time it comes loose. Hair on your head may contain just about anything in the air, stuff from a garden, hair tonics, bird droppings, cosmic rays, spit from your kids, etc.
On the brighter side a coin in a 2x2 is fairly, not completely, air tight. Most, not all, elements or compounds do not react with other substances when not exposed to air, Oxygen.
I don't think one hair could do much but if your shedding excessively, I would avoid the hairs in the 2x2's. Also, looks poor.

Often I find that there is dust on a new 2X2 that is actually from the cardboard part of the holder. IN other words, it seems that during the process of cutting the large sheet holders during production leaves particles of the cardboard on the plastic part. Do you think that this material would harm the coin?

A short time ago I purchased an old coin collection. Judging by the rusty staples and brittle plastic on the 2x2s the coins had been stored that way for a while. The coins that did have dust in the 2x2s were unaffected.

A can of compressed air used to clean computer key boards will fix that. Also, if you spend a few extra dollars, the higher end 2x2s don't have that problem.

Not exactly true. Of course if you purchase them separately, then any dust may have just fallen off. I've purchased 2x2's by the 100 in boxes and from several different manufacturers. So far every time I open those boxes there is some dust probably from the manufacturing process or boxing. Regardless of the reason and regardless of the price or manufacturer, I've always found some dust in the package.
