So this find stood out for me right away as soon as I pulled it out of the ground. It was covered in a hard encrusted layer of sand, almost like sandstone. At first I thought it was a button, but after cleaning it a bit I realized it had details on both sides, but the color and size were all wrong for the coins I know about. It's diameter is 22mm average and has a dark gray color to it. There are very few details left on it, but miraculously I was able to pull a partial date from it: it's from the 1640's! I don't even know what metal this is, is this what silver looks like after 400 years of salty water?
I'm not sure the date comes through as well in the picture, but it's pretty clear when you have it in your hands. What is this? Where is it from?

first off, but there is not enough left to do anything but guess at what it may be. Consider it a slug, less than a P01 gradeable coin. When this far gone, is junk bucket material. Neat mystery to pursue, but most often pointless, unless just for one's own satisfaction! (been there myself! )

Yes, I understand it is worthless to numismatics, but to the metal detectorist who found it, it's worth a lot of his time :-P

I can see that there are several letters, probably enough to identify the coin, but you will have to do the research as the pictures are not as good as having the coin in hand.

If I had to guess from those photos?

More seriously, I agree with Badger Mint:

That said, better-focused photos, of both sides, might help.
