How is it that there seems to be no distinction between the 1975 and the 1976 Bicentennial Dollars, other than in the mint sets. I do not consider myself a pro in any way, but in regards to the mint sets of those two years, I find that that '75 sets are of the Type 1 variety and the '76 sets have the type 2 dollars. Can this be true regarding the general mintage? I haven't seen a whole lot of these mint sets, so maybe I'm totally wrong. Would like more knowledgeable opinions on the matter.

What is amazing to me is that these "large" dollar coins are usually scratched and banged up before they even made it into a mint set. I have two dozen of these Type 1 that would never grade better then MS63 or 64 due to so many bag marks and yet I cut them directly out of mint sets.
Rest in Peace

Mintage commenced in Feb of 1975 for the Type 1's. Type 2's began in April of 1975 and continued through 1976. If you look at the population stats of the Philly 1975 RedBook lists only 4 million of them minted and Denver had 21 million of the overall approximate 100 million issued of each.

Now, think a bit how all these coins are actually produced. They are machine stamped, ejected mechanically(booted) into a transport hopper, dumped onto a conveyor belt to be shuffled into a sorting machine to be placed upon a cellophane wrapper where hopefully they are centered in the correct position then sealed by a heat and pressure machine and finally packaged in a container to be sent to a final resting place where they are again packaged in the final insult of a gregariously printed envelope and pawned off on gullible collectors who pay exorbitantly inflated prices for a seemingly inferior product.

Hey Moxking, just look at that sentence! Proud of myself!

The mint struck the type I's up till about the middle of 1975 and then made the type II's. All '75 mint sets have the type I and all '76 the type II. There are no known mules from any source.

While the mintage of the philly tI was only some 4 million there were another 2 million made for mint sets. Almost all of the 4 million and the vast majority of the 2 million are junk. Now days these still in the set are tarnished.

There are rolls of type I's out there but philly roles are few and far between.
Time don't fly, it bounds and leaps.

This is true. The only bicentennial Ike I am missing for the graded set is the variety 1 from Philly. Is has been challenging finding a nice one. I actually have two raw ones in my Dansco (the second is in one of the unlabeled holes), but neither would grade above XF.
