Hey all!

To start, I want to acknowledge that this is a tricky topic. Purists may say to leave them shut while folks out to complete a book/set may say crack away. I'm really curious if the coins in SMS sets are work more away from their set than keeping them together. What are your thoughts and/or observations? I own a few SMS sets and don't really collect them so I'm trying to field my options.

Cheers,
CK

There aren't many reasons to open an SMS. They don't fit in any business strike or proof set. They are there own thing and don't mix with anything. But if you have a nice cameo coin, you may want to submit that single coin for grading, leaving you with a graded cameo coin and the rest of the coins cracked out of a holder.

They can be opened, but you shouldn't unless you have a reason. If you have one, go bonkers!
Rest in Peace

I cracked 'em. I was putting together a complete contemporary US all denomination MS/PF collection from a target of 1964 through 2009. Budget doesn't allow to go much further either way on all the denominations. I use the SMS to keep my runs consistent, I developed my own layout for the coins so the SMS takes the place of a Proof issue for that hole. Just my personal preference is all. The SMS sets aren't expensive at this time so whatever you decide, won't break the bank!

The only reason for me to open them (which I did) was to fill the SMS holes in the Kennedy Dansco album (8166).

The only SMS coins I have are raw and I did not free them personally. I got them, as Crazyb0 said, to fill in the missing proof years for a couple sets to maintain date continuity (and making the set more complete). So, mine are accompanied by proofs in blank album holes.

I left mine intact. However, if you need them to fill a hole in a set you are creating - free them!

I have several intact SMS's but when it came time to fill the holes in my Kennedy collection I just bought the raw coins. They are readily available at an affordable price.
I figured that if later I wanted an intact set I'd have to buy it, so I might as well buy the coins and leave my sets intact and have both.
Rest in Peace

I have some intact and some bought as individual pieces . According to some price lists SP-65 or better are more than the whole set .

That depends. If you have any missing holes in your album, than I would say crack them open. If not, just leave them in there.
