Just wondering if anyone has found the following loonies in circulation?
2003 Diadem Effigy - This is the year the effigy changed. I've found a few 2003s with the current Uncrowned Effigy, but never the older effigy.
2012 Older Style - This is the year the Mint added the security features and changed the composition to plated steel. Obviously I've found many of the newer style 2012s, but never the older. According to Charlton there were 2.4M minted. I've heard about a truck accident that spilled a bunch of these, so that might explain why I've never found one. Just wondering if anyone here has ever found the old style 2012 in circulation?

For the 2012 old style toonie, most of these were distributed in the western provinces, the trailer load was heading for Toronto area distribution and because of ARP it's really hard to find in the wild but it does occur rarely. Just buy a 2012 Oh Canada set or something similar it will contain this toonie

Those 2 loons are hard ones to find in the wild. I used to CRH alot, and found mine that way. It ups your odds so much over waiting for pocket change. ARP hurts too. I'll bet I don't have a half a dozen of either. They are still out there now, until El ARPO comes their way. Some day they will be extinct. Grab some rolls and good luck. Be warned: looking for these loons may drive you "loonie". .

Quote: 2003 Diadem Effigy - This is the year the effigy changed. I've found a few 2003s with the current Uncrowned Effigy, but never the older effigy. I searched high and low for this one. I finally purchased one at J & M. The sales person didn't even think he had one, then I noticed it in the the display. The Charlton guide does not list this as circulating.

Quote: 2003 Diadem Effigy My Whitman folder doesn't have a spot for the 'old effigy' in the circulated set. I'll have to check my UNC (PL), specimen, and proof sets to see if it's in one of those. Quote: 2012 Older Style Just looked at my circulated set and FOUND that I have a newer-style loonie in the old-style hole. Arggh! Thank-you cedargrove! I may not have ever noticed my boo-boo if you hadn't mentioned it. Now we hunt together!

Thanks for your responses everyone. My unwritten rule is that I either find coins or trade for face value, however I may have to break my rule and buy these two.
Glad to hear that they can be found in circulation. I've been CRH for several years, so will still keep an eye out for them.
My Charlton guide shows both 2003 effigies as circulating, for a combined mintage of 5M. However it's the 2014 edition, so may have since been updated?

Cdncoins, can you double check your coin to see if its a proof like coin.
We have yet to see a picture of a circulated, business strike, 2003 old effigy loonie.
Thanks

I bought this one BU. This one I found in change. Sorry no 2003 Diadem Portrait. But something to seek!

Hopefully, these pictures will help those trying to figure out if they have a proof-like (NBU) or Mint-State (Business Strike) 2003 Loonie. I'm of the firm opinion that there are no 2003 MS Business Strike Crowned Loonies and that those that have been certified as such have been done in error. But then again, I'd be happy to be proven wrong :) 1 - Mint State/Business Strike 2 - Proof-Like/NBU Crowned 3 - Proof-Like/NBU Uncrowned "W" Mint Mark

I have posted here asking if the 'old effigy' was ever circulated, I believe I had conflicting replies...
To date, I have not found that one. I have found two of the 2012 'old composition' loons.
Have you found a 'regular' 1992? What about some of the other lower mintage "regular" loons?
If my notes here are current; 2002 = 2.3mil 2012 (old comp) = 2.4mil 2010 SK = 3.1mil 2004 reg = 3.4mil 1992 reg = 4.0mil 2010 reg = 4.0mil 2003 uncrowned = 5.0mil 2011 parks = 5.0mil 2012 grey cup = 5.0mil 2012 LL = 5.0mil 2014 LL = 5.0mil 2016 womens = 5.0mil 2016 LL = 5.0mil

2003 Diadem Effigy or old effigy, I don't believe this one exist in circulated business strike. I have been looking since 2011 and have yet to find anything.

@unruhjonny,
With the exception of the old style 2012 and the crowned 2003 (which I've never found), I have found all the versions you listed.
In fact I have found several of each of them with the exception of 2002, for which I've only found two.
I've even found a 2001 that someone likely broke out of a set.

@cedargrove, I brought the issue of the 2003 crowned portrait business strike Loon Dollar up for discussion a while back and got some interesting responses. I ended up scratching it from my list as I don't believe that this coin was ever issued as a business strike. http://goccf.com/t/249568&whichpage...=2003%2Cloon

This is why I cant trust any ICCS report that has certified 2003 Old Effigy (crowned) MS business strike loonies. Anyone see the mistake?
