I suspect it's taken a hit from another coin or being dropped, but the style of the lettering on British 50p's does vary a bit from one year to another, so please could you post a photo of the whole coin, or at least let us know the date and whether it's a standard design (Britannia or shield reverse) or one of the commemorative issues?
I'm still inclined to think that your coin may have just received a few hits in circulation - the upper left serif of the 'R' looks a bit battered as well. But I suppose it could be die damage - I'd be interested to hear any other theories from CFF members!
