My question is this why would a 1987 D LMC with the MMS-012 Mintmark not be considered a transitional variety? Variety Vista on their site calls this a rare cent. I understand that it is just a mintmark that was meant for a different year, but so were the reverses of traditional transitional cents.

Your coin does not look like 12 or a RPM at all to me.

Dang if I didn't post the wrong cent! Regardless, why wouldn't that cent be considered a transitional Variety?

I have never heard of a transitional mint mark for the 1987-D cent, so I will be watching what others have to say.

No one has, my original question was why is it not? A different year mintmark on a cent or coin is not much different than a wrong year reverse. Is it not?

Can you post a link to where you read that it is a rare cent and the wrong MM?

Mintmark puncheons were used from year to year. None are really exclusive to a certain year unless a specific reason as a new one being used for SF in 1974 because the post broke on the old one or something similar. So I guess your question is a bit ambiguous?

@John1 it is on the link on Variety Vistas site. I'm not very tech savvy but go to the DDO listings and there will be a tab for mintmark styles, when you open that tab click the Denver mint mark styles and that is where I found that. Guys, I'm sorry, the MMS-012 was used in 1987 but they are scarce. My question was for nought.
