Just wanted thoughts on this little item. It cropped up in a box of detecting finds that came into the shop. Opinions welcome! Weight 3.35gr. 26.7mm at widest point.

Hi Kev, it's been a while. Interesting piece I really don't know what to make of it. Was it supposed to be an AS? If so the weight is very light. FR is our resident expert on Roman bronze coins he should be along sometime today. Nice to see you back on the board.

Thanks Ron. Nice to have time to post! I am pretty sure it's brockage coinage, just wondered as to the rarity of such a thing with it being a hard to find emperor with him getting himself stabbed and all. I have a similar item with a coin of Nero somewhere. Will post pics of that as well shortly.

The portraits don't look right on either coin. Not really sure what to make of them, but I will go out on a limb and say neither is an official Roman mint error. Barbarians or some weird modern attempt to counterfeit, I am not sure.

I agree that neither looks correct stylistically. I suspect modern. I have seen a few modern fake brockages recently.

Bizarro 3.35 grams ? 1.85 grams ?
Made of what ? Tin foil ? I don't think it's bronze !
Didn't you once post what was believed to be a known fake many years back that had been 'found' in the field ?

Yes, that's a while back now. It was a "coin" of Faustina. I thought these 2 a bit more interesting, they are very thin, hence the weight, just thought you fellows would know what they are. The 'Pertinax' matches ERIC II page 290 IMP/CAES/P/HELV/PERTIN/AVG pictured from the side here. The Pertinax is a very strange, possibly newish, item but the Nero is no way modern. perhaps its needed in hand, it looks like a genuine brockage piece.

The style of the legend looks wrong to me IMP NERO CAESAR (AVG ?) P MAX TR (r r r ?)
Nero's face looks odd too No fat jowls no nasty sneer Rather reminds me of Augustus dressed up in drag
It's interesting alright but just a few too many questions about this one

The Nero I believe purports to be a Semis; the style is Imperial and only a semis could be 18mm but have his ugly mug on there.
My concerns: - The legend is garbled, especually beneath the portrait - A semis should weigh about 4-5g, more than thrice your coin's weight. Brockages aren't struck on extra thin flans. - Just look at the size of Nero's noggin! The Romans didn't practice cranial deformation.
