For some strange reason some collectors (and dealers) could not leave these coins alone and dipped the heck out of them back in the 70's (and later). Not only did they dip them, they failed to rinse them properly and the residue just started a toning process all over again.
Dip, rinse and repeat the process again every few years. It eventually kills the luster.
