I have found (but not bought) this 1875 Judd-1392 Sailor Head 20c pattern. It is very rough shape PCGS AG Details, Holed

General thoughts? Comments?

And some questions:

What is with that green and black stuff on the coin? I know PCGS does not holder PVC damaged coins, so maybe that green stuff verdigris then? Might it come off with acetone or maybe professional conservation?

Are those lines on the obverse and reverse damage that PCGS did not designate on the holder since they chose "Holed" and can only designate one thing wrong?

What might be a fair price on this? I know problem-free specimens go for a few thousand up to the tens of thousands, and this one is wayyyy far off from those but how far off?

Is something like this even worth owning, even for a fan of the 20c series and especially the 20c Sailor Head pattern?

And some speculation: how might a pattern like this even get to this condition: heavily worn, damaged, holed, etc. I guess I can understand the hole as someone wanting to wear it as jewelry, but how might those other things have happened?

Thanks in advance!

Don't know anything about these but searched it and found this site and it says only 6 known ? So I would say it probably has a nice price even in that condition

Well after more research I found it on PCGS but nothing lower then 60 so I don't know lol

You may want to try Collectors Universe but as far as the problems on the label and not, it's been given a 98 code which covers the surface damage in lieu of the 84 code for a holed/ plugged coin and merely stated it on the label so in my opinion the label covers all issues other than possible pvc damage which I'm not sure actually is.

Where did you find this piece? I'm pretty interested in it.

As for price, it would be individual. Very rare pattern with none like this, probably just throw a number out and agree on it.

Green/Black stuff you mention isn't PVC, imo. I agree with dave on the label, spot on.

Any pattern is worth owning in any condition! I'd buy it on the spot just for the cool factor.

Even in that condition I would be a buyer as well if the price wasn't totally off the wall. As for what it is worth, with that few known ( but there are considerably more than 6, PCGS has slabbed 15 and NGC 9. Probably some overlap and resubmissions but 20 would probably be a reasonable figure.) there is no way to set a price other then what the buyer feels comfortable with that the seller will agree to.

I think I may have found the seller and I wouldn't be willing to pay what was asked of it.

It's not something I'd buy, but it's fascinating.

I'd be interested to know where this is listed at and if it's still available too. A quick internet search didn't turn it up anywhere but here. Could be a good buy at the right price, and is certainly fascinating.
