Hi Again everyone,

This is a 2 part post. I would like to know the grade of this coin as well as which variety I have please. I know it seems like there are whizzing marks on this one, but I feel like that isn't very possible as I got this one in a baggie of coins that my mother in law had stashed away. I think they may be dings from the other coins that were in the bag.

thanks for your help

also, there is a straight line going across the reverse just above in god we trust. That is actually a mark on the flip cover not the actual coin.

thanks again

Malissa, pictures are way to small for grading. From what I see VF. As to varity, all I can tell you is it's 7 tailfeather. Any doubling or other oddities just don't show up with pics that small. Also this coin has the reverse of 1979.

sorry for picture size. I kept resizing and it just kept being too big. I'm not sure why I couldnt lower the kb but still have a more visible picture. Thanks for the attempt and maybe I will try some more pics later in the day.

I'll go as far as XF on this one ... TPGs are fairly lenient on Morgans. As far as the VAM ... it's difficult to tell with the photos. I did notice the point on the fourth right star is broken. You might check this link to VAMWorld and compare the coin in hand to their diagnostics (http://www.vamworld.com/1878-P+VAM-228). You'll need to check for a small die chip above the letter 'E' in Liberty. If that's not it, keep looking thru the listed VAMs for the "slanted arrow feather" reverse of '79 VAMs. I hope you have a good magnifier ... and welcome to the dark world of Vamming!

Howdy,

Vamming is , vamming is , so don't do it, otherwise you will .

Just kidding.
As SeatedNut says: You need a good magnifier or perhaps a microscope to look at your Morgan's or Peace-Dollars for a VAM.
In the first time it could be difficult, but the further you come, the easier it goes and can take you to a new level of collecting.

So, have fun

OK I am going to take a few practice shots of this coin because now I am intrigued by the vamming sites, but can't see a darn thing for myself. Hopefully I can find a way to make my pictures giant like other people do.

ok I am hoping these are detailed enough because I'm going to need more practice time to learn to resize and things like that.

Malissadawn ... every Morgan and Peace dollar has one of those " VAM things". Some are worth a hefty premium, but most are just interesting. VAM is an acronym derived from the founders of the study of Morgan and Peace die marriages ... Van Allen and Mallis. Every normal die marriage has a VAM number and when a significant change occured to the die (new die, damage, retooled) a new number was assigned to catalogue it. The really spendy VAMs are those with dramatic damage to the die from fatigue ... 1921-D VAM 1X Rim Cud, 1888-O Scarface, 1878 8TF VAM 14.11 Wild Eye Spikes; or a significant visual effect created in the making of the die ... Tripled Blossoms 1878 7/8TF VAM 44, 1888-O VAM 4 Hot Lips.

Unfortunately since you switched to photobucket I am unable to see the images (filters at work). And I spend so much time at home on ebay and other sites looking for VAMs I don't usually get back to CCF at home ... c'est la vie!

All genuine Type II obverse 1878 Morgans have a broken star point, it was a hub defect.

ok everyone, I finally figured out how to make the picture so I am including one last photo at extra LARGE size to see if maybe anyone can spot any more details. It's hard to see but there is a little letter M etched into the bottom of Liberty's neck.

thanks for looking
