Finally got around to getting a more accurate scale, one sensitive to 1000ths of a gram. Whether it actually is that accurate, who knows. My previous scale just went to 10ths of a gram.

So I checked out my 1 oz krugerrands and 2 were 33.945gms and 33.957gms and one was actually light, weighing 33.892gms.

Is that common? Every else checks out, details, size and ping.

Thanks for any insights.

There is an acceptable tolerance allowed on coins.I don't know what those numbers are for the Krugerrands though.

are you weighing them in the plastic holder. A ounce of silver should be approx. 31.11 grams.

One ounce of pure gold would be 31.11 g, but a Krugerrand is 22 karats, so the expected total weight is 33.93 g. All of your weights are within 0.2%, so I would think that's within tolerance.

And that is the reason I don't invest in Krugerrands. In Canada, investment grade gold or platinum needs to be 99.5% or better, 22K is 91.7%. Silver needs to be 99.9%. Any lower level of purity is not considered investment grade but a collectible and therefore triggers sales tax. Same for UK Sovereigns, older Britannias, all US pre 1933 gold and all older circulating silver. Note that Palladium is not considered an investment metal so purchases of palladium are taxable. The tax applied ranges from 5% through 15% depending on your province.
