To CCF! It was Struck Through Grease. It causes the devices to widen, and to be weakly struck on the coin. Sometimes, the crevices in the die can be completely clogged up, ending up looking like this. http://www.error-ref.com/struck-thr...-grease-oil/

@AIAJ, first welcome to CCF. Second, yes there was a bit of grease in the die when your dime was struck. This happens fairly frequently and not enough of the design is missing with your coin to be worth a premium.

It's caused by a Grease Filled Die. Interesting find!
Rest in Peace

Somebody stole it! Give it back!

Like your handle, you make fruit jellies?

When you encounter a grease-filled event, look for signs of a possible clashing of the coin on either side. Grease is a product of die maintenance and polishing. Residuals upon being wiped off get lodged within the die devices blocking a full impression of metal on the coin.
