1917 Wheat Penny. Is This An Error?

This penny appears to have the letter "E" to the upper right of 1917 and also appears to have a 6 or 9 underneath Lincoln's lower left side. I've included images. Any input would be greatly appreciated or maybe I'm just seeing things. Thanks Report this Post to the Staff

I'm just curious how PMD causes perfectly shaped letters to appear on coins besides someone intentionally putting it there. How does PMD cause a perfectly raised shaped letter "E" to appear on a coin's surface? The "E" is faded so I'm not sure if my photo is doing it justice. It's right above the date, right center of photo. It looks like the sort of "E font you'd see on a dime. Does anyone have pics of any other examples of this sort of PMD occurring? I watched a bunch of vids on PMD from avid coin collectors so I thought I had a grasp but now I feel like I don't know...lol. Report this Post to the Staff

You are fixed on seeing what your mind has set on already. As SilverDollar mentioned it is damage to the coin surface due to wear and tear and not an error. Report this Post to the Staff

JimmyD Bedrock of the Community Canada 21637 Posts	Posted 08/20/2018 3:41 pm Marine1999- Just a tip When wondering if a coin is an error or not, ask yourself how this could have happened at the mint. There are only certain things that can happen during the striking of a coin when you have a blank planchet being struck between the anvil and hammer die. Anything else is PMD no matter how it happened. Report this Post to the Staff

If it were on the hub, then it would be raised upwards like the date or other devices on the coin. If it is level with the field, then it is not a hub issue, but a contact mark.
