I am beginning to think he was referring to having a place for all three types of 3CS. This is an example of how many of the early coins are just represented once, whereas the more modern ones have multiples, like having space for three IHCs, four LHCs, etc.

You know, if you are bored with your completed set you can take over mine and fill in the wholes for me. I have done the hard work for you already and have bought all the modern coins and some odds and ends for the last hundred years.

Just got home. I was, of course, talking about a place in the 7070 for all three types of the Three Cent Silver.

And NO I am not bored with mine. That is why I keep upgrading it.

when I started my 7070 I had the bright idea of buying the best no problem coin I could afford and find at the time I was looking for that specific coin with nothing lower than a AU-50 and never upgrading any of the coins later but that just hasn't worked out that way because I have found some other coins that would fit better in the set and usually end up switching coins with the other one I just got

My type set is a collection of the possible. I don't mind a coin in VG if it is absolutely problem free and still has a certain amount of eye appeal. Of course I prefer coins in higher grades, but sometimes it just is not possible to get them.

Does anyone notice that for many coins there is a grade break in price? A coin may be very affordable in G, VG, F, but at some point, the price jumps a huge amount to go to the next grade.

Brian Your set is beautiful! I started mine with a minimum grade of VF-20 for the more expensive varieties. Now I am upgrading to AU or BU. I still find VF coins that I like better than the ones I have on the basis of eye appeal or scarcity. I had a VF-20 1817 Coronet Cent in the album, but just bought an VF-20 1820/19 Coronet Cent to replace it as it is choclate brown, less corroded than the example I had and the overdate is a neat variety. So I guess my going for a higher grade isn't the only thing I am looking for replacements, but also eye appeal and varieties. Still having fun!

Bryan that set is incredible! I noticed at the bottom that you had an assembly of grade stickers...did you crack a lot of those out of their cases to insert them in the album, I guess? How long did it take you to assemble?

What is the 1909 IHC variety? Does it consist of the L in Liberty?

Yes those are the ones that were cracked out of slabs, I just put the labels on the back cover after I cracked them out. I have been working on the album about a year and a half now I guess but I haven't bought anything for it in the last 6 months (coin money has been needed in other places) so I guess what you see is about a years worth of work. I hope to start buying coins to try and finish it off pretty soon though

it is actually a L in the head band, it has a large L over a small L. I will take some pictures to show what it is

My 7070 is my favorite set I am working on.

I hear ya there! I put a per coin spending limit on it. Some things are cheap to get in high MS but a couple have to be VG for me. A few things like the Trade dollar I couldn't resist going a bit beyond just because an EF\AU looks alot better than an F.

Q. David Bowers refers to the grade just prior to the big jump as "Optimal Collecting Grade". To me it seems their can often be 2 OCGs e.g. F to VF and MS64 to MS65. (Usually that means I cant afford either the 64 or 65.) The theory is that collecting at OCG gives the most bang for the buck. Also, economically this is where the best appreciation can potentially be had if demand increases for that coin, year, mint combo.

Thanks for the pic, Bryan. I never thought of there being Ls on any IHCs other than the 1864.

Latest update. I bought the last State Quarter proof set to crack it apart and get an S mint mark, proof Oklahoma Quarter for the 7070. Looks better next to the proof SBA and Sac dollars already in the set. Also replaced the 1817 Large Coronet Cent with a 1820/19 Large Coronet Cent so I could have an over date type in the set. Still having fun!
