Hey All,

This coming weekend I am meeting with a gentleman I met at his garage sale who told me he has the coin collection of his late father-in-law. He showed me a glimpse of the coins and he has circulated wrapped rolls of pennies from 1910 to 1990 and mint sets dating back to 1958.

Because these pennies are circulated how much should I offer him for a roll of the 1910 through any roll of the memorial date pennies? And of course how can I price these mint sets as well. I searched e-bay for the mint sets and non-silver sets go for as little as 10.00 but the mint sets that contain silver range from 15.00 to 30.00.

I do not want to offend him by pricing low but at the same time I do not want to over-pay. Just to add by his own admission he has no idea how much any of these coins are worth.

Thank you all in advance for your help.
ST

Rest in Peace

Personal experience with this exact same scenario has not been great for me. 3 out of 5 are looking for a free appraisal.

A fair offer, as seen with ebay sales, minus 30% for cash value items (immediately saleable) and 40% for common rolls is not unreasonable. Your time and earned knowledge should be worth a fair amount of potential profit.

To be honest, you shouldn't pay him much for the rolls, since they're circulated.

If the seller is not wanting to sort through the coins, to see if there are some
better date coins, then you should be buying them as common date coins.

If possible find out what a local coins shop would pay for the coins.

Where I would start is
Two Cents each for the wheat cents.
Face value for the memorials.
Mint sets with no silver coins should be bought, not much over face value.
Common date silver sets, buy at melt.

All the coins you posted sounds like common coins, that are hard to sell.
If you do find better coins when you are looking through them, those you offer
a wholesale price.

Make your list of the coins and give a offer on the whole collection.
Rest in Peace

GR58 is spot on. Buy as you would bulk circulated per 1000/5000 count. For LWC's if the mix does hold an approximate ratio of 25% pre 1940's 75% 40's and 50's then $155 per 5000 is reasonable. Now the Memorials, for copper only you could go $85-95 per 5000, stinkin zinkins at face only, no value there. Mint sets 1971-1990, figure $3 a piece for you to make a profit on turn around. 1958-1964 $7.50 ea, 1965-1970=$6.00 ea. All these are with your own profit on resale at 20-45% of cost.
