Hello everyone,

I have been lurking on the forum for a while now after becoming interested in the history behind British Coins. I have taken a fancy to coins containing precious metals, so pre 1947.

At the moment I have no idea how or where to start with a collection so any advice would be greatly appreciated haha

Look forward to chatting to you all on here.

to CCF!

Where to start? Browse around the subforums here and ask some question in other subforums. I would suggest picking up a reference guide and browse it as well. Enjoy and I look forward to seeing where you begin!

I personally love the reference guides/catalogues. They're chalk full of useful info. I suggest you pursue the local branch of your library for one (before purchasing one) just to see you wish to buy an older or current copy. Then knock yourself out here (there's ton of info from serious "keener" to the odd dabbler)

I definitely think I'll give the reference guides a look. Just to confirm, do you guys mean something like the Coin Catalogues published by SPINK? Sorry if that's a stupid question.

Welcome aboard.

I like the catalogues published by SPINK but if you can get your hands on a Coincraft catalogue that would be fantastic. I find it has more useful information on the varieties of dies, more pictures and cautions on what coins are susceptible to forgeries. The catalogue I have is a blue bound hard cover... roughly A4 sized and about 3-4 cm thick. I have seen these on Amazon, some discounted, some marked up even though all are used. I haven't seen one that was recently published.

It is unfortunately out of date for prices but most of the pre-decimal coin details haven't changed that much.

There are also a large number of on-line resources... one of the ones I refer to often for UK coins is http://www.coins-of-the-uk.co.uk/

Thank you very much for the advice. I'll check out the website you've provided and I'll get hunting for one of the catalogues.
