Not an error. It is only an error if it happened during minting,
and there is no way this happened then.
Either acid or corrosion damage. PMD

@JA, yes most likely an acid bath, although dimensions and weight would help to confirm. If you use the CCF search function with the keywords ACID and CENT you will see many other examples with which you can compare your coin.

Definitely took a bath in acid. It's Post Strike Damage (it happened after it left the U.S. Mint).
