It will be a long time before I get my thread series reaches this point, but I had to share.

Palas of Bengal
AR Dramma/Drachm
Obv: Stylized bust of king right, ornate Sri before, Vi Gra below
Rev: Fire altar with attendants, MA replaces fire altar shaft.

Like the Gadhaiya coins, these are an nth-generation imitation of the official Peroz drachms paid to the Huns as ransom in the late 5th century. The coins then split into three tracks - the first being the high-purity, anepigraphic and high weight Gadhaiya coins, the second being the inscribed types that would become the Sri Ha drachms, and finally the "Imperial Pratihara" types that are also inscribed but go through a period of utter chaos before settling into a handful of distinct types. These coins are low purity (about 20%) and are a predecessor of the famous Adivaraha or Bhoja drachms.

I haven't come across this type before, I like how they imitated the Fire Altar.

Now that's a nice coin Steve!

I've always loved the abstract style of the bust on these coins but WOW what a lovely reverse!
Never seen one showing the full design, great find....
