The devices are thinner due to overpolishing. The device is angled in the die, once the die face has worn down, this has taken off the wider area of a new device. Just the opposite will happen when a die becomes filled with grease, the thin top of the letters which is actually at the bottom of the device fills, making the device wider.

Note how shallow the devices are, appear worn off.
