I have an 1844 large cent with an "1845" stamped across the face and a doubled stamp "5" on the back of the coin. Pictures are worth a thousand words so the uploaded images probably speak better to the situation.

I am trying to figure out what the stampings were for, or if there is any reason behind them. Thanks for any input.

To the CCF.

They are called counterstamps.
They devaluate the coin but some people do collect them.
There could be any of a dozen reasons why it was done,
so unless you were there, you will probably never know.

You'll never find out why people do that to coins.

Interesting but it's unlikely you'll ever learn about why the counterstamping was done.
