Found this one a few days ago and I think it has a shot at being a new DDO, a Denver minted one too! There is very slight doubling to the bottom of the earlobe. The ear does not appear to have decreased in size, so I don't think it's MD or damage. I also sent these pics to Wexler and he says it might be. What do you think?

It is on the edge of the device and reducing that area. On the doubled earlobes, they are raised, not lowered.

All are raised, take a look.

On the outside edges of devices you find Machine Doubling.
On doubled dies they are raised and enlarge the area affected.

It is raised, about the same height as the rest of the earlobe, and it really doesn't look like the ear has decreased in size. The same argument you made can be said about the 42-S in that pic you posted; it's lower relief than the rest of the ear and it is on the outside edge of one of the devices. And we know that one is a DDO.

I know it may not be a doubled die, there's not much there to be 100% certain one way or another. But nothing about this looks like MD to me. If it's not a DDO, I think a die gouge or die chip is much more likely.

Wow Tanman, you've got a good puzzler there. I am inclined to go with a die gouge, although certainly would not be surprised if it comes out as a DDO. My rationale is more along the lines of the apparent variation between the height of the doubled section as it relates to the ear. It appears to taper from right up at ear level at the southern tip to considerably lower as it goes northwest. I would expect the doubling to be more egg shaped with a sharp, somewhat rounded drop off at both ends rather than a taper across the doubled area. Hard to explain clearly, but tapering like that should be on the far outer devices and not central like the ear. Just a theory, hope it is a DDO.

I made a side by side and I remembered afterwards seeing the same subject come up before.
2000-D-LMC-Possible-New-DDO---Doubled-Ear
It issue is that the die was polished and it reduced part of the devices on the middle wear level to remove a die clash on that side of the head. This isolated polishing reduced the size of the left side of the ear and the lobe part was further away from the die clash. But when you look at a normal ear, then you can see the reduction of the ears devices. Size of ear and lines on that area are weaker.

Tanman2001, he's too sick right now to do attributions. He's unfortunately battling with Parkinson's disease.

Just got this one back from Dr. Wiles

2000-D WDDO-001 is "Not a DDO. Overlays suggest that the 'secondary image' is within the lobe design. I suspect it as an incidental hit. I would need a second specimen to confirm it is a DDO, even then I would probably consider it too minor to list." -James Wiles
